Chavara Cultural Centre Delhi

Chavara Cultural Centre Delhi is to promote peace and harmony in the society through inter – religious dialogue and art and cultural interactions. This centre is an offshoot of Chavara Cultural Centre Kochi which is established in 1971 in memory of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, the great visionary and social reformer of 19th century who paved the way for a cultural transformation of Kerala through promoting universal education.

St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara

St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara a well-known social, educational, cultural and spiritual reformer of 19th Century Kerala and the founder of two indigenous Congregations in the Catholic Church of India, Carmilities of Mary Immaculate (CMI) and Congregation of the Mother of Carmel (CMC)
Following the footsteps of St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara, this Centre acts as a catalyst for fostering inter religious harmony, nurturing traditional art forms and providing platforms for discussions, seminars, debates on topics related to social harmony, peace and national integration.
St. Kuriakose Elias Chavara is one of the pioneers of Sanskrit education in Kerala. He founded the first Sanskrit School in 1846, attached to the St. Joseph’s Church Mannanam, under the patronage of Catholic Church in Kerala, where children irrespective of caste, creed and religion sat together in one bench which marked history in the social and cultural arena of Kerala. He taught children to respect everyone and consider others as brothers and sisters. He was a champion of social harmony and an exponent of peace and coexistence.
It was a novel and daring initiative of the time. St. Chavara considered humanity as one family, all human beings as children of God. He always stood firm for the universal brotherhood.
